“fROM THE sOURCE ITSELF”: rEADINGS FROM THE COMMENTARY ON THE GOSPEL OF jOHN BY mEISTER eCKHART

The Commentary on the Gospel of St. John, probably written by Meister Eckhart in the first decade of the 14th century, is one of his most mature and at the same time most controversial works. It charts a path that for its time is in many respects highly innovative.

Scholars of Master Eckhart’s work, men and women ranging across several nationalities and sensibilities, now gather to analyze and discuss this fundamental text from a multidisciplinary perspective: theological as well as philosophical, historical as well as philological. While the text is in Latin, it must also be understood within the context of Eckhart’s works in German (more specifically in Middle High German – Mittelhochdeutsch), as well as in the light of the controversial papal condemnation of Eckhart in 1328. As was highlighted by the renowned German Canonnist Winfried Trusen back in 1988, this condemnation in no way affects the person of Meister Eckhart or his work. It relates rather to a potential interpretation of 28 statements extracted from his work, statements formulated by the author in the typically radical manner – radical in all senses of the term – that is characteristic of Meister Eckhart’s thought.
